To me a power suit speaks in volume about women empowerment and asserts so much of self-confidence and power. For someone who knows it well, clothes are not just clothes it is how you express yourself. Whether you choose to dress up or dress down, it is an expression of your personality and who you are as a person.
Going down the lane to where it all started, the first women suit was seen in the 1920s when the iconic Chanel tweed suit was born, designed by Coco Chanel. However, it was the French designer Marcel Rochas who started the women’s pantsuit in the 1930s. Later iconic actress Katherine Hepburn was the one who made the power suit popular in the 1940’s. Then, it had a revival in the 1960’s when Jackie Kennedy wore a watermelon pink suit during the historic assassination of her husband. Also, during that time designer Yves Saint Laurent introduced the menswear inspired Le smoking suit for women.
It was in the 1980s power suit become more prominent when it made bigger impact in the way women dressed in the workplace demanding for equality and more female representation in the decision-making. Margaret Thatcher was one such female politician who embraced the power suit and led its popularity during her time as a female minister in the uk. Similarly, in recent years another such female politician Hilary Clinton wore pantsuit throughout her presidential campaign.
In 2018, the power suit has re-emerged and since the last few years, its popularity is soaring. More designers are injecting power suits in their collections and in my view as a designer, it is a manifestation of that bold cultural movement where demand for female and minority representation is surfacing around the world right now.
As they say, “these movements are not only impacting what is designed but how women choose to dress.”
About the outfit, I am wearing bubblegum pink linen blazer paired with a shorts underneath from my own clothing line Inspire. I paired it with heels from Zara. This post was a collaboration with Chardonnay and photographer Santosh Channtyal. I had a really good time shooting for this one.
– TYPES OF WOMEN’S SUIT AND HOW TO WEAR IT –
- The well tailored suits: The classic well tailored women suit will never be out of trend. it makes you feel refined and classy. Wear it with smart brogues or loafers to keep a formal vibe at the office. For a high-end event, for something extra you can pair it with a ruffled blouses and pointy pumps.
- The slouchy lounge suits: Various international designers reinvented the suit by taking the trend to a casual mode. Slouchy suits are comfy, casual and easy to wear. You can wear it with your sneakers or your flats. It is an edgy and cool version to power suits.
- The check suit: This versatile print is all over the fashion scene. I think playing with prints is one of the most fun part about fashion. A check suit obviously gives a strong and scholar vibe. But it is how you style it that can make a huge difference. You can wear it casually as well and it has been quite a hit in the street style fashion scene. Take some cue from the picture 1,4 and 5 from the collage below.
- The satin suit: If you’re not into sharp or structured suits, you can try this satin suit. It is perfect for an eveningwear or a night out. If styled femininely, it has the versatility to even be a date night look as the satin gives a very romantic texture.
- The velvet suit: Velvet is a very rich fabric. It evokes a very polished, but very chic vibe. You can pair this with a cute bralette or crop top for a girl’s night out or buttoned up with a turtleneck for official purposes. It is a perfect as a winter wear.
- The striped suit: Stripes are available in linen to woolen fabric. So, basically it has the versatility to go from casual to formals according to the material, which has the ability to give both polished and carefree look. For causal look, white sneakers will magnify the look with a cool edge. Colorful stripes add personality to the outfit and are even perfect for summer. Whereas, woolen stripes are the staple for office wear and important meetings.
- The sexy full monochrome suit: An all-red, all black, all white power suit definitely makes a statement. the deep cleavage baring without blouse style is definitely a hit on the red carpet but off screen it takes a daring person to carry it off. It screams confidence, sexy ness and boldness like no other suit.
- The color block suit: It is tricky trend and has been on trend for quite sometime now. If you know how to style it the right way it can take your style barometer way higher. If you bored with your daily office routine, dazzle up your outfit with this trend and let it brighten your day. If you are just meeting your friends or chilling, you can pair this look with graffiti tee and sneaker and cool over the shoulder bag.
- Floral suit: Don’t let the working day blues hit you. Spice up your working outfits with a playful floral print that will elevate your spirits and is infact an uber stylish piece to own.
